Organization profile

The School of Natural Sciences, formed by the careers of Veterinary Medicine and Engineering in Expeditions and Ecotourism Management, is present in Santiago, Concepcion and Patagonia.

The School of Veterinary Medicine develops research and outreach activities in two main areas:

  • Research on diseases and conservation of native wildlife under the "One Health" approach. Research and outreach activities are carried out in association with two Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers (CEREFAS, in Concepcion and La Patagonia) and also based on studies in free-living wildlife populations. From this, several lines of research are derived that are linked to undergraduate teaching in the areas of ecology, parasitic diseases, infectious diseases, wildlife conservation, epidemiology and public health, and the Diploma in Wildlife Management and Research. Likewise, this knowledge is linked to the community so that they can be active participants in the prevention of zoonotic diseases as well as in the valuation of wild species.
  • Research on endemic diseases that affect aquaculture. Among the main lines of work are molecular epidemiology, pathology, immunology and the relationship of nutrition with the sanitary status of crops. These lines of research are linked to undergraduate teaching in the areas of general microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, immunology, internship laboratory and fish pathology), as well as a diploma in salmonid production and health.

The Expeditions and Ecotourism Management Engineering career carries out outreach activities associated with the Landmark More Sustainable Tourism Territorial Program, which seeks to promote the development of tourism in Chile by incorporating the balance of economic, social and environmental dimensions. In this program, activities are carried out that link the University with public or private institutions, local communities and / or guilds. Research in the career is developed in the areas of: Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage, Natural Heritage and Natural Resources, and Sustainability and Tourism Planning. Teaching activities are linked to research and VcM through degree work in the following subjects: Advanced Orienteering (cartography and satellite navigation), Risk management, rescue and legislation, Expedition management and advanced orienteering, History and stories of Chile and its peoples, and Excellent customer services.
