Research interests

Ernesto López-Morales’ areas of expertise are urban development, housing, urban segregation, land policy, and gentrification. For example, by 2023, Ernesto carries out the Fondecyt Regular Code #1210972 project on the causes and effects of housing prices and their impact on the city and population. He participates in another project on land policies and value capture with Rutgers University, in the USA, in addition to collaborating with other research teams in Canada, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong on gentrification and land policy issues

Ernesto López-Morales holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from University College London (UCL) and a Master’s in urban planning from the University of Chile, where he previously obtained the professional title of Architect. He has a specialization in comparative urban studies at the University of Amsterdam. He is a Researcher at the University of San Sebastian, attached to the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, Patagonia Campus. His research work has been published in various journals and volumes in Spanish, English, and Portuguese


He currently teaches as a Tutor of the Architecture Project for final-year students, in the USS School of Architecture, Patagonia Campus, focusing on the city, territory, and public spaces. Besides, he has developed a Diploma program in “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and an “Urban Public Policies” course for the Architecture School’s new curricula
