The Doctoral Program in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship is based on the fact that the technological revolution and the demands of international competitiveness for productive enterprises impose the need for a strong rapprochement between academia and the productive sector. The preparation of professionals with advanced training in the area of biotechnology is a challenge that requires major changes with respect to the classical training in science and in the way of approaching Academy-Industry relations. Today's researchers, in addition to mastering the fundamental topics of biological sciences, must be versatile and multidisciplinary and apply the stages and requirements for entrepreneurship, business creation and requirements for transferring technologies and products from the laboratory to the market.
The program seeks to train students in the fundamental stages and characteristics of a science-based biotechnology venture. It includes models of entrepreneurship and financing mechanisms for start-ups that consider angel financiers, venture capital groups, capital increases, series A, B, etc. It also considers concepts of intellectual property and technology transfer. The requirements to obtain a patent and the processes to file patent applications in USA, Europe and Chile will be studied. The contents of patents will be studied and different examples will be analyzed. Patents and applications will be searched in different databases, in Chile and in the world, and the different types of licenses used in business agreements will be discussed. The program includes training in the registration process of products in the health area in the USA, Europe and Chile.
The PhD is organized around the following lines of research corresponding to the areas of Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship addressed through the research topics and associated research projects:
- Development of new bio-based technologies and their uses in Biomedicine
- Microbiome, Viroma, Bacterial Ecophysiology, and Associated Biotechnologies
