His research interests include the study of interactions in Extremophilic-Acidophilic microbial communities that can be used in the treatment of mining environmental liabilities, including mining drainage from dumps and tailings. Iván Ñancucheo is a Biochemist and Master of Engineering Sciences with a Major in Biochemical Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile. He obtained his PhD in Environmental Microbiology at Bangor University, United Kingdom, where he also completed a Post Doctorate. He was a permanent researcher at the Vale Institute of Technology located in Belém, Brazil and a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. He is currently an Associate Researcher-Professor at the Universidad San Sebastián Concepción, Chile where he leads the Biomining and Microbiology of Extremophiles group.

Teaching

In the Faculties of Engineering, Architecture and Design and Veterinary Medicine teaching different undergraduate subjects including Microbiology and Water Resources for Mining. He is part of the Faculty of the Master in Innovation in Biosciences and Bioengineering and the Doctorate in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship of the San Sebastián University.
