Purpose

The Engineering Doctorate Program aims to train researchers with an advanced level of knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute to the solution of complex engineering problems in emerging areas of interest to modern industry. In this context, the lines of research prioritized by the Program promote interdiscipline and have as a common purpose the generation, application and transfer of scientific-technological knowledge as a response to the needs of the industry of the 21st century based on knowledge and innovation.

Lines of Research

Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials: To develop nano- and bio-materials with advanced mechanical, dynamic, structural, magnetic, electronic, optical and/or catalytic properties, whose applications drive an emerging economy based on knowledge, innovation and added value. The integration of these materials with optoelectronic and biophotonic systems is also addressed, to develop applications in new technological devices, intelligent materials and high performance structural and seismic resistant materials.

Bioengineering, Energy and Sustainable Processes: To develop innovative and eco-sustainable biotechnological production systems that valorize natural resources in response to the environmental, economic and social challenges of productive development. Research is also conducted on the development of clean energy and technological solutions to monitor and respond to the impact of industry on the environment, with emphasis on the protection of water resources, mining, and the monitoring and control of emerging pollutants.

Data Science, Analytics and Operations: Develop scientific knowledge and technological applications through the use of mathematical tools and computational models to address emerging engineering problems. These areas include the design and application of algorithms to study and solve complex requirements from industries, processes, organizations, societies, transportation, biological systems and environment, using data science techniques, artificial intelligence, optimization models and computational simulation.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 2 - Zero Hunger
  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land
  • SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
