Research interests

Su línea de investigación se centra en entender la función de galectina-8, una proteína de unión a glicanos, en distintos contextos celulares. Ha descrito en conjunto con sus colaboradores que esta proteína actúa como inmunosupresor en el sistema inmune y que pacientes con enfermedades autoinmunes como el lupus sistémico y la esclerosis múltiple desarrollan anticuerpos bloqueantes de la función de galectina-8. Actualmente, está interesada en estudiar el rol de galectina-8 en transición epitelio-mesénquima (EMT), proceso por el cual las células epiteliales adquieren un fenotipo migratorio y proliferativo importante en reparación de tejidos y en cáncer. Su proyecto Fondecyt está centrado en dilucidar el mecanismo por el cual galectina-8 induce EMT y su rol en reparación después de un daño renal agudo (Proyecto Fondecyt: Nº1211829 ”Galectin-8 in epithelial mesenchymal transition and acute kidney injury (AKI) repair”).

Personal profile

Andrea Soza has a degree in Biochemistry from the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Germany. He completed his PhD in Natural Sciences with a mention in Molecular Biology at the same university. Subsequently, he completed a post-doctorate at the Institute of Biochemistry at Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Charité, Germany. He then obtained a CONICYT scholarship to carry out a post-doctorate at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Subsequently, she was hired as an assistant professor in the department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of the Faculty of Medicine, P. Universidad Católica de Chile. She participated as a guest professor in the Doctorate program of Biological Sciences with a mention in Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Science and in the Doctorate of Medical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Chile. In addition, she was a guest professor in the Cell Biology course of the Medicine, Dentistry and Engineering degree.

Teaching

Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Science of the San Sebastián University, where she works as a researcher at the Research Center for Cellular Biology and Biomedicine (CEBICEM) and as a professor of the Biochemistry program. He is in charge of the practical subject of Cellular Biology and the practical subject of Molecular Biology.
