Research interests

Biomarcadores en enfermedades autoinmunes y reumatológicas. Esta investigación, fundamentalmente clínica, está abocada a buscar biomarcadores con valor pronóstico confiable en pacientes que padecen una enfermedad autoinmune o reumatológica. Síntomas como dolor y artritis y compromiso de otros órganos, con pronósticos muy distintos, comprometen la vida y calidad de vida. Uno de los objetivos es encontrar y validar biomarcadores de daño renal. En esto participamos de manera colaborativa con un grupo de reumatólogos de América Latina examinando cohortes de pacientes con lupus eritematoso sistémico. Como esta enfermedad produce gran variedad de autoanticuerpos que pueden atacar distintos órganos, incluyendo el cerebro, también buscamos nuevos autoanticuerpos asociados on el compromiso neuropsiquiátrico, más allá de los conocidos contra proteínas P ribosomales o contra el receptor de NMDA, que ya hemos analizado. De gran interés actual son los autoanticuerpos contra Galectina-8, ya que bloquean a esta proteína neuroprotectora. También tratamos de validar criterios diagnósticos de fibromialgia, una enfermedad que se presenta como dolor generalizado en personas con artritis inflamatorias crónicas y lupus, constituyendo un difícil problema clínico. Por un contexto autoinmune posible de la fibromialgia buscamos autoanticuerpos contra la galectina-8 en pacientes con lupus y fibromialgia. Lograr unamedicina de excelencia, con impacto en mejorar la calidad de vida y salud de los pacientes requiere identificar biomarcadores.

Teaching

Full Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the San Sebastián University. Since 2017 he joined the CEBICEM Cellular Biology and Biomedicine center of the Faculty of Medicine and Science of the San Sebastián University, actively participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It carries out a teaching-care and research polyclinic at the Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Regional Hospital in Rancagua and at the Félix Bulnes Cerda Clinical Hospital of the Western Health Service, clinical fields of the USS, where clinical research projects in rheumatology are carried out. in chronic inflammatory arthritis, fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus along with teaching USS inmates.

Personal profile

Physician-surgeon specialist in Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. Pre- and postgraduate university studies in Medicine carried out at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. And he completed rheumatology training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in Bristol, England. I have worked for ten years at Hospital Sotero del Río and for over 30 in the UC-Christus health network of the Catholic University of Chile in assistance and teaching in rheumatology at undergraduate and graduate levels. With 88 scientific publications in indexed journals, the majority in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Recognitions: Master of Latin American Rheumatology PANLAR 2022. Academy of Medicine Award 2012, Santiago Medical Society Conference Award 2017.
