Organization profile
The Center for Scientific Studies (CECs) is dedicated to the advancement of science and the progress of the Los Rios region. Its strategy is to promote the cross-fertilization of basic and applied projects in collaboration with national and international partners. Its main research areas are theoretical physics, biology and glaciology.
Research in theoretical physics focuses on the physics of black holes and extensions of gravity that include fundamental interactions. In biology, the main focus is on the study of cellular energy metabolism and epithelial physiology, based on murine models. The research of the glaciology group has focused on the exploration of glaciers located at high altitude in the central Chilean Andes, Patagonian glaciers and Antarctica.
In education, a long-term research and teaching collaboration program between the Center for Scientific Studies and the Universidad San Sebastian is prominent, and the training and education of young scientists is carried out in association with national and international universities.
With respect to outreach, the Corporation carries out multiple activities in the Science Tent and in the laboratories, aimed at schoolchildren and the general public.
