Organization profile

The Institute of Philosophy was born in May 2018 under the wing of the Faculty of Psychology. Its objective is the cultivation of philosophy through teaching, research, linkage with the environment and extension, in permanent interdisciplinary dialogue and open to faith, science, technology and culture, tending to the formation of people willing to seek and promote the good, truth and beauty.

At present, the Institute is composed of 17 full-time professors present in all its branches.

Our work is oriented to the so-called Practical Philosophy, that is, we intend to deal with human affairs from the perspective of the Christian Humanist Educational Project. This Humanism invites us to look at the essentials of human existence, reminding us that, without truth, goodness and beauty, it is practically impossible to reach our ultimate goal, which is none other than happiness.

Thus, our mission is to contribute to the integral development of the person, bearing in mind that the academic is called to form the student's intelligence so that he/she is capable of discovering the truth and, at the same time, to strengthen his/her will so that he/she perseveres in the search for good and the rejection of evil, and bearing in mind that the academic is also called to open the heart of his/her students to solidarity.

Practically this translates into the following areas:

  1. An area of ongoing formation in the USS seal to students and professors by professors of the Institute.
  2. A line of publications that serve as the basis for bibliographical references for our core and elective courses: Anthropology, Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Art, Person and Transcendence and Philosophy of Economics. They are also distributed to other institutions of higher education. At present, the Institute has more than 11 books published in the last 5 years.
  3. In the area of research, the Institute is currently developing a line of research on the phenomenon of solidarity, which is currently linked to the USEC and Church organizations and foreign universities, which will translate these and other results in an International Congress next year.
The research areas of the doctoral research professors are also being developed at the individual level.
  4. An area of diffusion and VcM. This translates into a permanent Colloquium of the Institute of Philosophy where academics from the Institute and renowned academics and intellectuals from Chile present their work. This Colloquium is available to the USS community and the general public.
