Resumen
This article presents the basic notions of the operation cost of public transportation and critical aspects of its analysis. It explains what the operation cost of public transportation is and why its study is relevant. Next, the article reviews the main input factors needed to produce public transportation. It explains the different measures of output and the problems of using an aggregate output to estimate operation cost and their effect on the analysis of the industrial structure using the economies of scale, density, and scope. Finally, the article reviews the effects of regulation and contracts on the firms’ operation cost and efficiency.
