Gravitational waves as an astrophysical probe for torsion

Descripción

"The primary purpose of the current research proposal is to use GWs and future multimessenger observations as a probe to
constrain spacetime torsion and torsional theories. In Refs. [1, 2], we created novel mathematical tools to describe Laplace
operators on Riemann-Cartan geometries and their relationships (generalized Weitzenböck identities). Using these tools in the
eikonal limit, we discovered that torsion creates an anomalous propagation of amplitude and polarization. These general features
can be used as probes to detect torsion through precision observations of GWs.
We also discovered how to generalize these mathematical tools to more general superalgebras. This project’s secondary objective
is to use these theorems to explore the eikonal limit of a class of theories, the expanded and S-expanded supergravities.
The current research project is the natural continuation of some of the exciting findings we have done in Refs. [1–14] as part of the
FONDECYT projects 1180681, 1150719, 1130653, and 11080200 from the Government of Chile.
Besides scientific research, this project involves the participation of several graduate students and outreaching activities for
the general public, as we have already done on other research projects. In a public funding project, both aspects are vital. The
first is crucial for the training of new generations of scientists. The second is vital to show to the public the extraordinary value of
scientific research. Moreover, doing both things together teaches the students the importance of communicating with the public."
