Resumen
Introduction: Breakfast is one of the principle meals of the day in scholars and adolescents, principally associated with good academic performance. Objective: to associate breakfast consumption with nutritional status, food habits, sleep quality, in Nutritional and Dietetic Students. Material & Methods: A transversal analytic study, 634 students of both sex from first year to fourth year of Nutrition and Dietetic at the University of San Sebastian were interviewed. The Pitssburgh Sleep Quality Index was applied to each student, Insomnia Index, Epworth Sleepniness Scale, food habits survey, basic anthropometry (weight/height), in addition the students were classified on physical activity levels. The Studen T test is used, with a significant level of α=0,05. The statistic package SPSS 22.0 was used. Results: 68,4% of the students declared to consume breakfast at a regular basis, in relation to this, the subjects that consume this meal present less BMI (23.1 vs. 23.6 kg/mt2; p<0.05), better sleep quality (score of 10.5 vs. 11.4; p<0.001), less score in insomnia (score 9.6 vs. 11.6; p<0.001), and less sleep latency (24.0 vs. 34.2 min; p<0.001). On the other hand, the ones that have breakfast smoke less (29.5% vs. 50.5%) and present better health habits (score of 30.2 vs. 25.2; p<0.001), of those which don’t have breakfast. Conclusion: The consumption of breakfast could play a fundamental role in health habits of Nutrition and dietician students, converting this in an indicator of a healthy lifestyle.
