Abstract

Unauthorised or informal activities have long been an integral part of urban life. Although there are numerous studies that focus on urban informality, the production of public space remains a relatively understudied area. Based on experiences gathered in five human settlements in Piura, Peru, this study aims to investigate the spatial properties of public space produced by its inhabitants, to understand the motivations and initiative behind its production and use. The paper concludes that the spaces produced represent an opportunity to question and redefine the traditional conception of the city.
