Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of current trends in laboratory diagnosis and pathogen surveillance for aquatic animal viral diseases and how they apply in diagnostic aquatic animal virology. This chapter is not intended to be a laboratory manual of diagnostic virology tests but rather a review of the basic concepts and principles, enabling the reader to understand (1) the virology behind the test/technique, to be able to understand the ordering of tests and interpretation of test results, (2) the relevant current literature on the topic and (3) the challenges and prospects for improvements in aquatic animal viral diagnosis.
