Abstract
The article focusses on the International Recognition that the Popular Unity government made to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1971, deepening on how both States approached, first with simple commercial relations, to then advance to diplomatic ties. The position of Chile within the international context of Cold War, and the national political panorama is analyzed. The research is based on an exhaustive review of unpublished sources obtained from the Historical Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile.
