Description

Resumen: Southern BioImaging Platform SBIP is based on the Leica Stellaris 8. This laser scanning confocal microscope, the first in the country equipped with a white laser permits tunable excitation in the visible and near infrared range, adjustable bandwith emission, and sensitive detection of up to 5 fluorophores. Specific features are super-resolution, 4D imaging, lifetime imaging, autofocus and a heated gas chamber for prolonged live imaging. The beneficiary institution of SBIP is Universidad San Sebastián, Valdivia, and the platform will be located within the premises of the associate institution Centro de Estudios Científicos CECs, Valdivia, with Universidad de La Frontera, Temuco, also an associate institution. Confocal microscopes in the macrozone are near obsolete and oversubscribed, and many researchers and graduate programs at Universidad Austral de Chile have expressed their strong support for this initiative. SBIP will serve biologists residing in La Araucanía, Los Rios and Los Lagos regions to analize living and fixed cells and tissues labelled with fluorescent markers. A dedicated tissue culture room will facilitate the work of extramural users and there will be preferential access to the SPF mouse facility at CECs. In the steady-state SBIP will attend the needs of more than 30 research groups and 5 PhD programs, fostering the city of Valdivia and the Southern Macrozone as poles of fluorescence microscopy.
