Sebastián Araneda Rojas is a Dental Surgeon from the San Sebastián University, a Master in Biomedical Sciences with a mention in Oral Pathology from the University of Talca, and is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Dental Sciences from the University of Chile.

He has been teaching since 2017 in the areas of General and Oral Pathology, Microbiology, Pathophysiology, and Anesthesiology for pre- and postgraduate Dentistry at the U. San Sebastián. Likewise, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of Pathology and Microbiology at the U. de Chile and U. Diego Portales.

His line of research focuses on the host-pathogen interaction, specifically on the role of oral bacteria in the development of systemic diseases. During his master's degree he developed his thesis titled “Helicobacter pylori, is there an association with oral lichen planus?” Currently, in his doctoral thesis he is studying the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a key pathogen of periodontitis, in the inflammatory response via canonical Toll/NF-kB receptors in human placenta explants. In this way, their research proposes that the virulence factors of P. gingivalis are recognized by TLR receptors, activate the canonical NF-kB pathway and secrete proinflammatory cytokines, which could trigger premature birth and low birth weight in pregnant women with periodontitis. .
