Personal profile

Personal profile

Rodrigo Torres has a degree in Biological Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica and a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology and Neurosciences from the Universidad de Chile. His first foray into neuroscience took place in the laboratory of neuropharmacology, starting his interest in neurochemistry and behavior. This led his PhD to delve into the chemical modifications of DNA and its role as a link between genotype and phenotype, with particular interest in the environmental influence on neuronal morphology. Currently Rodrigo has consolidated an independent research line focused on basic aspects of neurobiology

Teaching

Rodrigo Torres teaches Molecular Biology and Cell Biology courses for the first year of medical school. These courses provide the tools to understand the basic aspects on which modern medical advances are based, being a fundamental part to understand the contents of more advanced courses. In addition, in this first year Rodrigo seeks to share with students the interest in scientific knowledge, highlighting the importance of critical thinking when contemplating new evidence

Research interests

Rodrigo Torres maintains his interest in the neurobiology of behavior from its molecular origin. His line of research focuses on the plastic capacity of neurons that allows us to modify our behavioral responses over time. This plastic capacity begins with the regulation of the transcriptional activity of key genes. Thus, chemical modifications of DNA contribute to our ability to change in response to environmental stimulation. This becomes particularly relevant in light of neurodevelopmental disorders and autism spectrum disorders in which this plastic capacity is impaired
