Personal profile

Personal profile

Pedro Álvarez received his B.Sc. degree in applied physics from the University of Santiago de Chile. He later obtained a PhD degree from the same university. The subject of his thesis was symmetries and exotic non-relativistic supersymmetries. His career continued with a postdoc in the research line of gravity and supergravity theories at the Centro de Estudios Científicos del Sur, Valdivia, Chile. Subsequently he did another postdoctoral stay at the Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Oxford, UK, where he studied the topic of axion-like particle detection predicted in large-volume string theory scenarios. Between 2017-2023 Pedro worked as a professor at Universidad de Antofagasta to join Universidad San Sebastian at the end of 2023.

Research interests

His research encompasses supersymmetry, gravitational theories and cosmology, with emphasis on exotic non-relativistic symmetries, gravity and supergravity. He also explores theoretical scenarios in string theory for the detection of axion-like particles, as well as topics in statistical mechanics and general relativity.

Teaching

Pedro's teaching area includes everything from basic mathematics to analytical functions in the area of mathematics. In the area of physics the courses Pedro has taught include: basic physics, mechanics, undergraduate and graduate classical mechanics, undergraduate and graduate quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, electromagnetism, electrodynamics, general relativity, modern physics, fluid mechanics, among others.
