His main research interest is the role of metacognition in university education contexts. In this way, he has studied how cognitive monitoring and self-regulatory strategies influence students' learning and academic performance. He is currently researching how metacognition influences the emergence of academic dishonest behaviour.

Mauricio Barrientos is a psychologist and PhD in Developmental Sciences and Psychopathology. His research has focused in metacognition in different experimental contexts. He has also worked as a methodologist in different national and international research projects.

Mauricio teaches, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, in the area of quantitative research. At undergraduate level, he has been in charge of several courses related to research methodology. At postgraduate level, he participates in the course Quantitative Analysis in the Doctorate in Psychology and Mental Health. His experience as a researcher and methodologist enriches his teaching by promoting an approach based on real applications and encouraging students to reflect on the research process.
