Research interests
His research group studies the evolutionary patterns of genes that are associated with diseases in humans. In particular, research interests are associated with understanding functional diversity and its origin. To meet these objectives, the group uses public databases where complete genome sequences are found, as well as experimental approaches in the laboratory.

El Dr. Juan C. Opazo es biólogo y doctor en Ciencias Biológicas con mención en ecología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Realizó dos pasantías postdoctorales, una en el Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics en Wayne State University y la segunda en el School of Biological Sciences de la University of Nebraska Lincoln. Antes de incorporarse a la Universidad San Sebastián fue académico de la Faculñtad de Ciencias en la Universidad Austral de Chile.
Teaching
At the USS he is a member of the faculty of the doctoral program in computational biology, as well as a collaborator of the doctoral programs in cell biology and biomedicine and chronic diseases. Teaching is associated with the evolutionary patterns of genes that are associated with diseases in human beings.
