Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr. Hery Urra, holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Chile. After his PhD, he specialized on brain cancer at Centre de Lutte Contre le Cancer Eugène Marquis in France and conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at the Biomedical Neuroscience Institute (BNI) in Chile. As a staff scientist at BNI, he independently researches the molecular mechanisms driving brain cancer progression. He is also an adjunct professor at the Center for Geroscience, Mental Health, and Metabolism (GERO, Chile). He has received multiple awards and grants for his research

Research interests

As a researcher at Universidad San Sebastian, Dr. Urra focuses on understanding the role of protein homeostasis and the actin cytoskeleton in brain cancer progression. His research objectives include: (i) studying the molecular pathways driving Glioblastoma invasion, (ii) exploring communication between Glioblastoma and stromal cells and their impact on cancer progression and proteostasis, (iii) defining the functions of proteostasis and the actin cytoskeleton in cancer progression and metastasis, and (iv) developing strategies to target brain tumors. He is also involved in translating his findings to head and neck cancer. This work aims to advance knowledge and identify potential therapeutic approaches

Teaching

Hery Urra is a professor at the Facultad de Odontología y Ciencias de la Rehabilitación at Universidad San Sebastián. He teaches Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology at the undergraduate level. Dr. Urra has also been invited to serve as a professor in PhD programs at Universidad de Chile and Universidad de Talca. He supervises undergraduate and doctoral theses, providing guidance to aspiring researchers. Additionally, Dr. Urra leads scientific projects, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in his field
