Dr. Gonzalo Mardones is a biochemist at the Universidad Austral de Chile. He has a doctorate in Biological Sciences with a mention in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He completed two postdoctoral internships, one at the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado in the city of Denver, USA, and a second at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the city of Bethesda, state of Maryland. , USA. Before joining the USS he was an academic at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Austral de Chile, in Valdivia.

    Teaching

At the USS he has been a collaborator and currently a member of the faculty of the doctoral program in Cellular Biology and Biomedicine, teaching in Experimental methods in structural biology for biomedicine, Biomolecular condensates and their impact on human health, and Structural bases of cellular pathology.

    Research interests

His research group studies the structural and evolutionary bases of the molecular mechanisms that allow compartmentalization within cells, with emphasis on those that occur in the Golgi apparatus, and their relationship with pathological processes such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. It uses a multidisciplinary experimental strategy combining methodologies such as X-ray crystallography and fluorescence microscopy in living cells.
