His research focuses on Macro-Eco-Evolutionary dynamics to understand the complexity of life, where he uses phyloinformatics approaches to assess hypotheses about the spatial and temporal patterns associated with variance in nature in general. His research is framed within a macroecological perspective of macroevolutionary processes, where he utilises models of diversification and evolution of genetic, ecological, and morphological traits in a phylogenetic and biogeographic context to understand biodiversity patterns, ranging from individuals to ecosystems.

PhD in Biological Sciences, specialisation in Ecology, and a postdoctoral research position at the P. Universidad Católica de Chile. He has a 30-year career in the university field as an academic and researcher, and has generated more than 90 scientific publications, one book, and several book chapters. He has led over 30 research projects, guided more than 25 undergraduate students, and over 25 graduate students, as well as three postdoctoral fellows. He received the Leaders of the South Award in 2007 and is a member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences' Frontier Science Program in 2012. He has also served as an Honorary Professor at the Universidad Católica Santa María (Peru) since 2013 and as a CNA Postgraduate Peer Evaluator since 2020, among other distinctions.

He participates in teaching activities within the Veterinary Medicine program, primarily in courses on ecology and scientific research methods, using topics directly or indirectly related to his research as the basis for his classes. In postgraduate studies, he participates in the PhD program in Computational Biology, drawing on his experience with research on evolutionary models using phylogenies and null models in ecology.
